DEFORD Henry Stephen Wheelwright & Blacksmith 1846 Henry Stephen Deford, blacksmith & wheelwright. Born in 1846. Parents: James Deford and Elizabeth Rollison. He learned his trade from George E. Lambert, who operated a carriage shop in Chestertown, Kent Co., MD. In 1893, Henry was operating a wheelwright shop out of the Lambert carriage shop, with Ned Ringgold (also in the Blacksmith Index) operating the blacksmith shop. Henry is listed as a blacksmith/wheelwright in the 1870 and 1873 Kent County Directories and the 1903 Maryland Directory. Henry never married and lived for many years with his unmarried sister Kate. His household at times also inlcuded a widowed aunt and a motherless cousin. In the Kent News of 28 April 1934: "Henry Deford, one of Chestertown's oldest citizens, has been quite ill at his home in Chestertown". Henry died in May 1935. He is my great grand uncle and his parents are my great great grandparents. His sister, Mary Elizabeth Deford, married my great grandfather, William Samuel Elburn. DOWNS Isaac Wheelwright & Blacksmith 1816 Isaac Downs, a farmer's son was born 13th October 1816. Wife:Elizabeth Hopwood, married 1842. He was a Master Blacksmith living and working at Manchester Road, Heaton Norris, Stockport (this being Lancashire in the first half of the century and Cheshire in the latter half). Two of Isaac's sons became blacksmiths, and one became a wheelwright. Isaac died in 1872, but his wife and sons were still running the business in 1891. EDON (HAYDON) Frederick Wheelwright & Blacksmith 1858 Frederick Edon(Haydon) was born illegitimate in 1858, the son of a widow who registered him as Frederick Lee HEYDON. From census data, he appears to have been fostered out immediately (Frederick EDON "visitor" aged 3 in 1861). By 1871 he was apprenticed as a Wheelwright in Okehampton. By his own story he ran away from his apprenticeship to join the Army. I cannot find him in 1881. In 1885 he married in Wimborne, Dorset, but his wife Eliza Ann Cross died in pregnancy. By now he was using the HAYDON spelling. In 1888 he married my great-grandmother Kate Ann Plowman in Southampton - her father George Plowman was also a blacksmith. Frederick moved back to Wimborne for a year or two with Kate, and then they settled in Poole, Dorset. Frederick apparently died in 1912. Unfortuantely, no name or email address supplied..

GATTWARD Edward James Wheelwright 1878 Edward James (Ted) Gatward, a 4th generation Wheelwright, was born on 25 Apr 1878 at Haslingfield, Cambs where he grew up helping his father as a Blacksmith. He married Kate Eleanor Anderson in 1906. They lived in Haslingfield and had two children. After enlisting as an Army Shoeing Smith in Nov 1914, he was assigned to the Royal Horse Artillery with Service no. 51174. He fought in France from Jan until Nov 1915 and was invalided by the Army out due to poor eyesight in Nov 1916. He was denied a medical pension as the belief was that he had poor eyesight before he joined the Army. He returned to Haslingfield as the Blacksmith. At the time of the 1939 Register he was still working as Master Blacksmith in Haslingfield. Shortly after 1950, they moved to Risborough Rd, Bedford to live with their son Bertie. Edward died there in 1953 aged 74. Kate lived to be 86 and died in 1961. In 1950 Ted Gatward was still living and working in Hill View, Haslingfield, aged 72. He was the last working Blacksmith of the 21 Gatward Wheelwrights of Cambridge..  
GATTWARD John Wheelwright 1810 John Gattward, wheelwright & carpenter journeyman . Baptised at Little Eversden, Cambridgeshire on 28 Oct 1810 the sixth child of William and Sarah Gattward. By 1841 John had moved to Ombersley, Worcestershire and worked as a Journeyman Wheelwright. The 1851 Census records John as a Journeyman Carpenter. John died and was buried at Ombersley in Jan 1857 aged 47. John and his family maintained the Gattward spelling of their name and their descendants still use this spelling.

William appeared at an Insolvency hearing in Cambridge in July 1838. William was listed in the 1839 Trade Directory as the Wheelwright in the village of Newnham on the outskirts of Cambridge. William died in 1840 at Little Eversden aged 65. GATWARD Albert Allen Wheelwright 1870 Albert Allen Gatward, a 4th generation Wheelwright, was born on 27 Jul 1870 at Harlton, Cambs. When he was still a small child his family moved to Haslingfield, Cambs. The 1881 Census records his father Albert as the Blacksmith, his wife Caroline as the Blacksmith’s wife and 10-year-old Albert A as “assists his father in smithy”. The 1891 Census records him as a Blacksmith still living at home then in July 1892 he married Emily Gillett. In Sept 1893 they had a son Albert Arthur Francis Gatward. Albert became a Blacksmith in Hinxworth, Herts where he and Caroline had three daughters. Albert appears in Kelly’s Trade directories as the Hinxworth Blacksmith from 1894-1902. By 1908 the family had moved to Mortlake, Surrey and during WW1 their son Albert enlisted as a Butcher in the Royal Army Service Corps. He was transferred to the Royal Fusiliers and was killed in active service. Albert Allen carried on working in Mortlake and aged 69 he was still active as a Farrier & General Smith. He died in Mar 1947 aged 76. Emily died aged 83 in 1948 at Wandsworth..  
GATWARD Alfred Wheelwright 1841 Alfred Gatward, wheelwright and carpenter. He was baptised on 22 Aug 1841 at Royston, Hertfordshire where his father James was working as a Wheelwright. His parents moved back to Orwell when he was aged 3. He remained unmarried and lived with his parents in Orwell until he was 50. He is listed as a Wheelwright in the Census of 1861, 1871, 1881 and 1891. He continued living in his parents' house after they had died. He was admitted to the County Asylum at Fulbourn in Sep 1912 and died there on 1 Feb 1913 aged 72..  
GATWARD George Wheelwright 1835 George Gatward, wheelwright. Baptised on 25 Dec 1835 in Orwell, Cambridgeshire. He was the eldest child of James Gattward a Wheelwright from Orwell. He married Rhoda Gentle at Caxton in 1860. In the 1861 Census he is recorded as a Wheelwright in Orwell. They moved to Mile End in London and George is listed as Wheelwright in the Census records of 1871 (Stepney), 1881 (Wanstead) and 1891 (Forrest Gate, West Ham). George lived to be 60 and died in West Ham in 1896..  
GATWARD Harry Charles Wheelwright 1879 Harry Charles Gatward, a 4th generation wheelwright, was born on 16 Jan 1879 at Dalston, London the fourth child and only son of William and Ann Gatward. William was a wheelwright working in Hackney. Harry volunteered to join the Army on 25 May 1897 at Dalston, when aged 19 years and was assigned Service No. 20245. He Attested for the Royal Artillery and was engaged as he had been working as a Wheelwright for the previous two years. A Wheelwright would be a useful occupation in the Royal Artillery as they had Gun Carriages, Horse Carriages and other wooden wheeled transport that needed maintaining. Harry was sent to India on 4 Dec 1898 and remained there for over ten years. During that time he was promoted from Gunner to Corporal then Bombardier. He returned to England and on 15 Dec 1909 he married Annie Elizabeth Margaret Hogben at St Saviour Church in Folkstone, Kent. When WW1 commenced in July 1914 Harry was sent to France as part of the British Expeditionary Force (BEF). He remained in France until 31 May 1915. On 18 Oct 1916, he was again sent to France where his unit stayed for the remainder of the war returning on 14 Jan 1919. Harry was discharged having completed 21 years of service. Harry and Annie continued to live in Folkestone and in the 1939 census, he was listed as a General Labourer. They later moved to Ealing, West London where Harry died in June 1955. GATWARD Henry Arthur Wheelwright 1855 Henry Arthur Gatward, a 4th generation wheelwright, was born on 6 Jun 1855 at Eccles, Lancashire whilst his father Thomas was working as a Joiner. He was baptised at St Mary’s Church, Eccles. Then the family moved to the St Botolph area of Cambridge where Thomas worked as a Wheelwright. Around 1865 the family moved to Shadwell, London and Arthur is recorded in the 1871 census as aged 16 and working as a carpenters apprentice. Henry died in Sep 1879 in Whitechapel, London aged 24. It is possible that Henry had a child who was born after his death on 11 May 1880 at Bethnal Green. She was baptised as Grace Emmilin Lois Gatward and her mother was Maria Elizabeth Gatward (née Cady)..  
GATWARD James Wheelwright 1814 James Gatward, wheelwright. Baptised on 3 Apr 1814 at Little Eversden, Cambs. He was the eighth child of William and Sarah Gattward. James continued his father’s occupation of Wheelwright. At the age of 21, he married Susannah Marshall on 25 Sep 1835 at Orwell, Cambs a neighbouring village to Little Eversden. They had eight children all born in Orwell. Listed in the 1841 Census working as a Wheelwright at Royston, Hertfordshire. By 1851 the family had moved back to Orwell and he is recorded as a Wheelwright in the Census records of 1851, 1861, 1871 and 1881. In 1891 when aged 77 James was listed as a Journeyman Wheelwright then at the age of 87 he was recorded as a Carpenter with a special comment that he was blind. James died aged 96 at Caxton. Four of James’ sons became Blacksmiths..  
GATWARD Robert Taylor Wheelwright 1839 Robert Taylor Gatward, wheelwright. Born in mid-1839 at Newnham, Cambridge. He was the third son of William Gatward and a 3rd generation wheelwright. He lived in St. Botolph and Grantchester, Cambs as a child and became a wheelwright working with his father William. Robert and Rebecca Randell were married at St Philip’s Church, Bethnal Green on 24 Mar 1861, he was aged 21 and she was 23. Robert was a wheelwright for over 30 years as recorded in the Census of 1861 (Shoreditch), 1871-81-91 (Bethnal Green). They lived in Bateman’s Row, Bethnal Green and had nine children, Robert died in mid-1892 aged 53..

Listed in Cambridge Poll Book of 1837 at Union Rd, Cambridge as a Wheelwright. He is recorded in the 1841 Census as a Coachmaker living at Russell St, Cambridge with his wife Anne and five children. He died in 1843 aged 40..  
GATWARD Thomas Wheelwright 1827 Thomas Gatward, wheelwright master & carpenter. Born in 1827 in the St. Clements area of Cambridge. He was the eldest child of William Gatward and was the third generation wheelwright. At the time of the 1851 Census Thomas and his wife Mary Ann were living next door to Thomas’s parents in Grantchester and he was working as a Wheelwright. They moved to Eccles, Lancashire where Thomas was working with his brother William as a Joiner. By 1861 the family had moved back to Newnham, Cambridge where Thomas was a Wheelwright and Publican employing one Journeyman Apprentice. In the 1863 Poll Book for Cambridge, he is listed at London Road, Cambridge as a Wheelwright. Around 1865 the family moved to Shadwell, London where Thomas worked as a Carpenter. In 1879 Thomas became the Proprietor of the Royal Oak, Public House in Epping, Essex. He continued at the Royal Oak for about 5 years and then reverted to being a Carpenter while still living in Epping. He died in Epping aged 64 on 11 Dec 1891..  
GATWARD Wiliam Edward Wheelwright 1848 William Edward Gatward, a 4th generation wheelwright, was baptised on 22 Oct 1848 in Grantchester, Cambs. He grew up in Grantchester, then in the St Botolph area of Cambridge attending school while his father Thomas worked as a wheelwright. Around 1865 the family moved to Shadwell, London where Thomas worked as a Carpenter and William was a wheelwright. On 26 Dec 1878 when aged 30 at St Mary, Stratford Bow, he married Sarah Ann Maggs. They had 5 children and William’s became a Builders Carpenter. Around 1885 they moved to Camberwell and William worked as Carpenter Foreman. He died aged 46 on 9 Jul 1896 at 45 Caulfield Rd, Peckham..

Baptised on 1 June 1806 at Little Eversden, Cambridgeshire the second son of William Gattward Wheelwright. Slater's 1850 Directory of Cambridge records him as Blacksmith and Wheelwright at Newnham. The 1851 Census records William as living as a Widower with 4 children. His son William aged 13 is also listed as a Wheelwright. In the 1861 Census, he is lodging at St Botolph, Cambridge working as a Wheelwright. The 1871 Census lists him as boarding in Little Wilbraham, Cambridgeshire working as a Carpenter. His sons Thomas and Robert Taylor also worked as Wheelwright and Carpenters. William died in 1873 aged 67 in Cambridge..

They lived in the Shoreditch/Hackney area and William worked as a wheelwright as recorded in the Census of 1871 (Stepney), 1881 (Shoreditch) and 1891 (Hackney). William appeared in the 1880 and 1882 Post Office London Suburban Directory listed as a wheelwright at Railway Arches, West Street, Hackney East. Their son Harry Charles was born in Dalston in Jan 1879, he became a Wheelwright in the Army. William died aged 69 in Camberwell, London in 1900, where he was probably living with his daughter..  
GATWOOD Archibald Edwin Wheelwright 1848 Archibald Edwin Gatwood, a 4th generation wheelwright, was born in early 1848 in Redland, Bristol, the first surviving son and third child of Edwin and Alice Gatward. The family moved to Hammersmith, London sometime around 1890. Within two months of turning twenty-one Archibald was admitted to the Freedom of the City of London as a wheelwright. His father Edwin was also listed on the papers as a Wheelwright and gave their address as 543 Holloway Road, Islington. Archibald moved to his own residence in Saint Pancras South in 1908. On 27 Aug 1910 at St James Church, Clerkenwell, when aged 30 Archibald married Eugenie Avent. By 1911 they were living at 74 Durham Road, East Finchley, London North. Archibald recorded himself as a wheelwright and also an Evening Instructor at Borough Polytechnic College. In 1919 Archibald and Eugine moved to North Acton, London and by 1939 they were living in Maidstone, Kent, with Eugine’s mother. Archibald was working as a Commercial Motor Body Builder's Foreman. Archibald died on 14 Dec 1943 at Maidstone aged 74..  
GATWOOD Edwin Wheelwright 1848 Edwin Gatwood, wheelwright. Born in early 1848 in Bedminster, Bristol, the 6th child of Edward Gatwood Coachmaker. In the 1871 census, he was recorded as a Commercial Clerk/Engineer with Bristol Wagon Works Co. Limited. This period in Bristol was one of tremendous growth and innovation spurred by the development of the Bristol shipping industry and the Great Western Railway. In July 1874 aged 24 he married Alice Mary Hooper in Bristol. They had four children between 1876 and 1882. By 1891 the family had moved to Hammersmith, London where Edwin was working as an Agent for Railway Rolling Stock. In 1895 he established a Coach & Harness Maker business in Old Kent Road, South London. In the 1901 Census the family had moved to Islington, North London and Edwin is recorded as a wheelwright and also as an Employer in Holloway Road. By 1911 Edwin had retired and he and Alice were living with their son Arnold in Finchley. Edwin died here on 2 Aug 1911 aged 63. Alice lived to be aged 76 and died in 1923. Their son Arnold Walter Gatwood died during WW1 from wounds he received in action in France, he left a wife and two children. Another son Archibald Edwin Gatwood was a Wheelwright and received City of London Admission papers in 1900..

First went to New York with his parents William Harrison and Ann Morley who were Whale Bone Ruler Makers ; and then to South Australia arriving 9th May 1854 per the ship "Flavius" from Singapore. Joseph married Margaret Shanks on 29th May 1854 in Adelaide SA & they raised 12 children. Occupations included Whale Bone Ruler Maker in Warwick and New York. Policeman in Adelaide SA. Wheelwright & Blacksmith in Kapunda SA. Engineer in Kapunda SA. He was considered to be rather brilliant in his chosen field of steam driven vehicles and highly respected as an Engineer. Educated and trained in all occupations. He died a pauper after a long illness living on his own in Kapunda. Listed in both Blacksmiths of Australia & Wheelwrights Indexes..

HAYDON (EDON) Frederick Wheelwright & Blacksmith 1858 Frederick Haydon or Edon was born illegitimate in 1858, the son of a widow who registered him as Frederick Lee HEYDON. From census data, he appears to have been fostered out immediately (Frederick EDON "visitor" aged 3 in 1861). By 1871 he was apprenticed as a Wheelwright in Okehampton. By his own story he ran away from his apprenticeship to join the Army. I cannot find him in 1881. In 1885 he married in Wimborne, Dorset, but his wife Eliza Ann Cross died in pregnancy. By now he was using the HAYDON spelling. In 1888 he married my great-grandmother Kate Ann Plowman in Southampton - her father George Plowman was also a blacksmith. Frederick moved back to Wimborne for a year or two with Kate, and then they settled in Poole, Dorset. Frederick apparently died in 1912. Unfortuantely, no name or email address supplied..

Born circa1735-1741 in Worksop or Tuxford, Nottinghamshire.   John married first wife Sarah Thorpe in 1775 in Normanton.  They migrated from Worksop to Market Rasen in 1776.  Children: (1) William born 1777 (see clockmakers index); (2) John died in childhood; (3) George born 1781 (see indexes for clockmakers, Jewellers and ironmonger).   Wife Sarah died in 1784. In 1790 John Levick married 2nd wife Elizabeth Boston and they had four children (1) Ann 1792 (married a gentleman from Nottingham), (2) Thomas 1796; (3) John 1797 (a baker) ; (4) Samuel 1800 (a servant at the Welbeck Estate).   All were orphaned by 1800 and were raised in Worksop, presumably by relatives, except Thomas who died, aged 1yr.  .

Hanging Heaton is a small village on the hillside above Dewsbury and Batley West Yorkshire..

RINGGOLD William Edward (Ned) Blacksmith 1862 William Edward "Ned" Ringgold was born 29th March 1862 on Kent Island, Queen Anne's County, md. In the 1880 census, he is listed as an apprentice wheelwright with Henry P. Jones on Kent Island. In 1893, Ned and his wife, Susanna "Annie" Arters, moved to Chestertown, Kent County, Maryland. Ned worked with Henry S. Deford at the G.E. Lambert Carriage Building on Cannon Street in Chestertown. Ned eventually owned and operated his own blacksmith/wheelwright shop on Court Street in Chestertown. A newspaper clipping from 26 February 1938 Entitled "57 years spent as a blacksmith" notes that Ned predicted he had shod 114,000 horses. He announced his retirement and said that Marion Parsons would take over his blacksmithing duties. Ned died 4th December 1938 and another newspaper clipping entitled "late W. E. Ringgold's Will devides (sic) estate" lists his two daughters as Heiresses; my grand aunt, Ethel Baum Ringgold Miller and my grandmother, Molly Rebecca Ringgold Elburn. 1830 James Tyler Tylor, blacksmith & wheelwright. Born about 1830 as James George Taylor at Country Harbour Nova Scotia. In 1861 he married (1) Julia Long (she was the governess at Gingin, Western Australia). Under the name of Tyler he worked as a blacksmith. At some point Julia ran off with someone else, we don’t know what happened to her? James later married (2) Annie Louise Toovey in 1882 at Albany WA; they used the name Tylor and still do to this day (even though the correct spelling is Taylor). In 1880 (approx) James worked as a wheelwright in both Albany & Tenderden WA. Betwween 1883 & 1892 James & Annie owned a Smithy shop at Eticup (note: Eticup no longer exists; was near to Broomhill WA). After 1892 they moved to Katanning WA where James died in 1911. Annie, the district Midwife, died 1937, Katanning. Notes from a teachers report of Julia Long, shows James was a convict and he is believed to have been in WA since 1842. James is listed in both Blacksmiths of Australia & the Wheelwrights Index..

1920 Reginald Stewart Vinson. In the 1920's he was a blacksmith/wheelwright/iron worker, he served his apprenticeship with Metters of Tavistock. His daughter Valerie say "my knowledge is a bit vague im afraid but it must have been about the late 1920s. At the time Reginald lived at Devon Great Consols Lamerton. We however shifted to quite a few moorland villages as the work dried up. When the horse was supplanted by the tractor he went to work at Devonport dockyard and was sent to Gibraltar just after WW2. VOIGHT Johannes Carl Wheelwright & Blacksmith 1880 Johannes Carl Voigt, blacksmith & wheelwright. He went by the name of John Charles Voight as it sounded less German. Born in 1880 in Queensland, Australia. Died in 1964 in New Zealand. He came to New Zealand with his family after his mother died in1885? When first in NZ he worked for Turnbulls as a wheelwright at Waikiwi and Invercargill. In 1901 John went of to the Boer War along with another man named Watts (who later, in 1905, married John’s sister Ruth Voight). In 1907 John had a blacksmith business in Waipahi which he kept until 1913; then the family moved to Pleasant Point, near Timaru. His main business here was on the main street near the town hall. The only other Smithy in the area was in Totara Valley and this was managed by a Mr. Anderws. In 1919 John bought a farm of 400 acres not far from Albury. He sold the farm in the 1950s and retired to Geraldine. He was one of those men who was already ready to help others out; he was also a great Church man. In WW1 he was the local recruiting officer. 1885 Benjamin Webber, blacksmith & wheelwright. Born in 1885 Uffculme, Devon, England. Benjamin worked as a blacksmith for his father who was also a blacksmith from a very young age. He served in the 1st world war as a blacksmith in the RFA. At the end of the war with his brother also a blacksmith, they set up a forge on windmill road in Croydon. Ben lived the remainder of his life working at the forge until he passed away in 1966. Ben is listed in Blacksmiths of Surrey, Wheelwrights & Military Indexes..

WINTON James Wheelwright & Carpenter 1793 James Winton, carpenter and wheelwright. Born in Kent, some time between 1793 and 1801, in the neighbourhood of Tonbridge or Tunbridge Wells. Three charges were brought against James at the Lent Assizes at Maidstone in Kent on 17 March 1817. The jury decided that James was guilty and he was sentenced to be "hanged by the neck until he is dead". He was reprieved and sentenced to transportation for fourteen years. Arriving in NSW as a convict aboard the ship "Larkins" , James went on to live a useful and productive life in Wilberforce NSW as a carpenter and wheelwright.
