GLOVER |
Thomas |
Shipwright |
1783 |
Thomas Glover, shipwright. Baptised 10th August 1783 in Bideford. However, his ages in the census suggest he was probably born about 1778. Thomas was the son of Thomas Glover (Snr) and Thomasin Pedlar, Thomas (Jnr) married Mary Brown of Barnstaple in Bideford on 14 July 1806 and they had seven children. It appears that he gave up being a shipwright and took on a less strenuous job as he got older, so the only evidence of his original trade is in the 1861 census. In 1841 Thomas Glover 59 was living in Newington Street, Barnstaple with wife Mary 59 and daughter Mary15, occupation labourer in a factory. In 1851 widowed Thomas Glover 71 was lodging at 27 Newington Street, Barnstaple, occupation watchman at lace factory. In 1861 Thomas Glover 83 is living in Horwood's Almshouses, Barnstaple, occupation ship carpenter. He died in the March quarter 1870 aged 92..

GLOVER |
William |
Shipwright |
1786 |
William Glover, shipwright. Baptised on 23 July 1786 in St Margaret's, Bideford, Devon, the fourth of five children of Thomas Glover (1744-1821) and Thomasin Pedlar (1746-1834). Marriage banns were called in March 1811 in St James, Parkham, and describe him as a carpenter. Bizarrely the marriage entry for 17 April calls him a husbandman, but this may be an error on the part of the vicar. His wife was Elizabeth Ratclift/Redclift/Redicleave (numerous spellings) and they had seven children - John 1812, William 1813, Thomas 1816, James 1818, Robert 1824 (died 1826), Betsy 1827 and Robert 1831, all born in Bideford. Their son Thomas's marriage certificate of 8 April 1840 describes William as a shipwright. In 1841 and 1851 he was living in Cooper Street, Bideford and is described as a baker, and his wife Elizabeth's death certificate of 5 November 1852 describes her as 'wife of William Glover, baker'. In 1861 75-year-old William (formally a ships carpenter) is living with his widowed daughter Betsy Gayton in Union Street, Bideford where he died on 22 January 1866 aged 83 years..

I would really be interested in knowing more about their background, at least in part because I have strong family links with Devon, and at least some of those are with the Navy and Plymouth..
