Isle of Portland History Blacksmiths   Some notes about the population of Portland: it appears to have increased in the 1850’s and 1860’s, with tradespeople including blacksmiths coming from across Southern England. They were working to build the new breakwater to create a natural harbour for the fleet of the Royal Navy, along with the traditional stone quarrying and work at the prison. The four legs of the new breakwater totalled 2. 84 miles in length - they were created between 1849 and 1872 from stone blocks, along with an imposing defensive fort at the main port entrance. By 1901 the volume of work for blacksmiths was decreasing and they had to switch to other jobs like fishing, boatmen for the Port and work at the prison and stone quarries..  
AYLES John Blacksmith 1841 John W Ayles, blacksmith. Born on Portland Isle, Dorset, England in 1841. John was the son of John and Charlotte Ayles. Recorded as a blacksmith on Portland Isle in 1861, but later that year enlisted in the Royal Regiment of Artillery. Married Ellen Scott in Bengal, India in February 1876, and in 1881 was a blacksmith at the School of Military Engineering in Kent. He died in Kent in 1903..  
BAMFORD James Blacksmith 1838 James Bamford, blacksmith. Born in 1838 at Greasley, Nottinghamshire, England. The son of William and Mary Bamford. James was an apprentice blacksmith from 1851 - 1861 at Portland and a blacksmith. He then moved back to the Midlands where he died in 1923..  
BAMFORD Samuel Blacksmith 1831 Samuel Bamford, blacksmith. Born in 1831 at Ilkeston, Derbyshire, England. The son of William and Mary Bamford. He was a blacksmith in Portland in 1851 and married Sarah Ann Comben there in 1854. He was still in Portland in 1861, but by 1871 had moved as a blacksmith to Portsea, Hampshire where he died in June 1881..  
BLIGDON John Blacksmith 1825 John Bligdon, blacksmith. Born in 1825 at Litton Cheney, Dorset, England. The son of John and Ann Bligdon. He married Hannah Symonds at Long Bredy, Dorset in 1858, and is recorded working at Long Bredy as a blacksmith from 1851 to 1871. In 1881 and 1891 he was a blacksmith on Portland Isle, but had retired by 1901. He died in Cheshire in 1904..  
BLIGDON John Blacksmith 1861 John Bligdon, blacksmith. Born in 1861 at Long Bredy, Dorset, England. The son of John and Hannah Bligdon. John is recorded as a blacksmith on Portland Isle, Dorset in 1881, but by 1888 had moved to Lancashire where he married Sarah Jane Reevey in Liverpool, Lancashire. In 1891 was working as a blacksmith and worked there until he died in Liverpool in December 1911..  
BLIGDON John Croad Blacksmith 1828 John Croad Bligdon, blacksmith. Born in 1828 at Litton Cheney, Dorset, England. The son of William and Jane Bligdon. He married Maria Pitcher at Litton Cheney, Dorset in May 1852, and is recorded as a blacksmith at Litton Cheney from 1851 to 1871. He then moved as a blacksmith to Portland in 1881 and 1891, but died back at Litton Cheney in November 1896..  
BLIGDON William Blacksmith 1867 William Bligdon, blacksmith. Born in 1867 at Litton Cheney, Dorset, England. The son of John and Hannah Bligdon. William was a farm boy aged 13 in 1881 and worked as a blacksmith on Portland Isle in 1891. He then moved to Cardiff, Wales and married Harriet Wellman in Cardiff in 1893, and was a wood machinist there in 1901 and a stationary engine foreman in 1911. He died in Cardiff in 1950..  
COCKS James. P. Blacksmith 1850 James P Cocks, blacksmith. Born in 1850 on Portland Isle. The son of James a carpenter and Jane Cocks. He is recorded as apprenticed to blacksmith John Collins on Portland Isle in 1871. He married Ann Mitchell on Portland in 1873 noted as a blacksmith living on Portland. Missing from the 1881 census, in 1885 he was sentenced to 9 months of hard labour for obtaining goods by false pretences. In 1886 he married Jane Cossens in Weymouth, Dorset after Ann had died, again referred to as a blacksmith. No further confirmed facts were found. Maybe they went abroad to start a new life?.  
COLLINGS George. R. Blacksmith 1866 George R Collings, blacksmith. Born in 1866 on Portland Isle, Dorset, England. The son of John and Eliza Collings. Recorded aged 14 as a blacksmith in Portland in 1881 and again in 1891, but by 1901 George was a fisherman and in 1911 a stone quarryman. He died on Portland Isle in 1950..

COLLINGS Walter Blacksmith 1877 Walter Collings, blacksmith. Born in 1877 on Portland Isle, Dorset, England. The son of John and Eliza Collings. The 1891 census lists him as a scholar at home,. The 1901 census lists him as working as a blacksmith with his brothers on Portland. By 1911 he was working in the stone quarries, and on enlistment, for W W One in 1916 he is listed as single and a fisherman. He died on Portland in 1947..  
COLLINGS William.B.H. Blacksmith 1871 William B H Collings, blacksmith. Born in 1871 on Portland Isle, Dorset, England. The son of John and Eliza Collings. The 1891 census lists hom as a blacksmith on Portland, where in 1896 he married Elizabeth Comben White. Sadly Elizabeth died in June 1900. In December 1901 William married Elizabeth Jane Simpson in Birmingham. He is listed as a blacksmith working on Portland in 1901 and 1911, where he died in 1950..

In 1849 Benjamin married Caroline White in Weymouth, Dorset, England. Recorded as a blacksmith from 1844 to 1881 at Easton, Portland Isle. He died on Portland Isle in May 1889..  
COMBEN Robert Blacksmith 1841 Robert Comben, blacksmith. Born in 1841 on Portland Isle, Dorset, England. The son of Stephen Dyer Comben a waterman and his wife Sarah. Robert was also a waterman in 1861 before he married Elizabeth Pearce in 1862 and is recorded as a blacksmith on Portland from 1871 to 1891. In 1901 Robert was a licensed victualler and a farmer in 1911 before he died on Portland Isle in April 1913..  
COX Frederick Blacksmith 1845 Frederick Cox, blacksmith. Born in 1845 at Horsington, Wiltshire, England. The son of Elizabeth Cox a single woman and a servant. Frederick married Mary A Jolliffe in Weymouth, Dorset in April 1867, and is recorded as a blacksmith working on Portland Isle in 1871. In 1881 he is a factory engine smith at Bridport, Dorset, and in 1901 a toolsmith at Weymouth, Dorset. He died there in September 1910..  
COX Philip Blacksmith 1828 Philip Cox, blacksmith, Born in 1828 at Corfe Mullen, Dorset , England. The son of Richard a thatcher and Lucy Cox. Recorded as a blacksmith in Weymouth in 1851, on Portland in 1861 and at Corfe Mullen in 1871. He died in Dorchester, Dorset in April 1877..  
CROAD James Blacksmith 1823 James Croad, blacksmith. Born in 1823 at Wyke Regis, Dorset, England. The son of James Croad a dairyman and his wife Elizabeth. He married Sarah Elmes at Wyke Regis in 1848 and is recorded as a blacksmith’s apprentice on Portland Isle in 1841 and as a blacksmith in1851. He missed the 1861 census but in 1871 was a blacksmith at Poole Dorset. He died back in Wyke Regis, Dorset in October 1876..  
CROAD Robert Blacksmith 1837 Robert Croad, blacksmith. Born in 1837 at Wyke Regis, Dorset, England. The son of Henry and Priscilla Croad. He is recorded as a blacksmith on Portland Isle in 1861, before marrying Mary Ann Pudding there in July 1866. From 1871 to 1911 he was a blacksmith in Weymouth, Dorset, before dying in the County Asylum, Dorchester, Dorset in March 1915..

Recorded as a blacksmith on Portland Isle in 1841. On the 1851 census he is missing. He died on Portland Isle in either 1860 or 1861..  
DINE John Blacksmith 1831 John Dine, blacksmith. Born in 1831 on Portland Isle, Dorset, England. The son of John and Mary Dine. He married Elizabeth Winter in Weymouth in 1855. Recorded as a blacksmith at Reforme on Portland in 1844 through to 1911, by which time he had retired. He died on Portland in 1912..  
FALL John Blacksmith 1876 John Fall, blacksmith. Born about 1876 on Portland Isle, Dorset, England. The son of Henry and Grace Fall. In 1891, aged 15 years he was a blacksmith’s apprentice on Portland Isle. The 1891 census lists him as 18 years. He joined the Royal Navy in October 1893. John married Frances M Keates in Dorchester, Dorset in October 1900 and died at Weymouth, Dorset in 1909..  
GIBBS John Blacksmith 1837 John Gibbs, blacksmith. Born in 1837 on Portland Isle, Dorset, England. The son of Robert and Mary Gibbs. In 1861 he was listed as a blacksmith on Portland and he then moved to the Midlands and married Mary Hosking in Birmingham, Warwickshire in 1863. He stayed as a blacksmith in Warwickshire until 1901, but I have not been able to confirm his death..  
GREENWAY Edwin Blacksmith 1830 Edwin Greenway, blacksmith. Born in 1830 at Brampford Speke, Devon, England. The son of George and Mary Greenway. The 1851 census is missing, but in 1857 at Broadmayne, Dorset he married Maria Bascombe. Their daughter Mary Maria was baptised on Portland Isle on 1st November 1857, followed by Alfred James Greenway on 6th January 1861. On 11th January 1861 his wife died, and that same year he is recorded as a blacksmith on Portland, but after that, nothing more can be found. When his son Alfred James a gardener, was married in Liverpool in August 1889 it refers to his father Edwin as a blacksmith but does not say if he was deceased or where he lived. His older brother William was also a blacksmith, but he is not listed staying with him from 1871 to 1895..  
GREENWAY William Blacksmith 1825 William Greenway, blacksmith. Born in 1825 at Brampton Speke, Devon, England. The son of George and Mary Greenway. The 1841 census lists him at home aged 15. In 1852 William married Ann S Hinde in Portland. In 1861 he is still a blacksmith at Portland, but after that is a travelling blacksmith listed in 1871 at Appleby, in Westmoreland, and in 1881 at Norton, Lincolnshire and in 1891 at Eccles, Lancashire, where he died in August 1895..  
GULLICK Tom Blacksmith 1850 Tom Gullick, blacksmith. Born in 1850 in Weymouth, Dorset, England. The son of Thomas a prison warder and Ester Gullick. In 1871 Tom was a blacksmith on Portland Isle. He married Elizabeth Meer in Norton, Surrey in 1882. From 1881 to 1911 he was a stoker on a stationary engine at Portland prison. He died on Portland in 1916..  
HARDEN Frederick Blacksmith 1862 Frederick J Harden, blacksmith. Born in 1862 on Portland Isle, Dorset, England. The son of Francis and Elizabeth Harden. Frederick is recorded as a blacksmith on Portland in 1881. He married his first wife Elizabeth Jane Haskell at Portsea, Hampshire in 1886. Is missing in the 1891 census but is a blacksmith on Portland in 1901, where he married Emma Cann (widow and daughter of blacksmith Richard Collings) In 1911Frederick was working as a blacksmith for a Portland stone firm. He died there in 1938..  
HELYEAR James Blacksmith 1860 James Helyear, blacksmith. Born in 1860 at Burton Bradstock, Dorset, England. The son of Joseph and Mary Helyear. James was a blacksmith’s apprentice in Burton Bradstock in 1881, and married Margaret aka Bessie Trevett in Weymouth in 1889. He was a blacksmith on Portland in 1891 and 1901, but a labourer there in 1911. He died on Portland Isle in 1930..  
HODDER William Blacksmith 1849 William Hodder, blacksmith. Born in 1849 on Portland Isle, Dorset, England. The son of Joseph a farmer and Catherine Hodder. In 1871 William is recorded as a blacksmith on Portland, but a publican in 1881 on the island. Then became a carriage cab proprietor through to 1911. He died on Portland in 1932..  
HUTCHINGS Henry Blacksmith 1838 Henry Hutchings, blacksmith. Born in 1838 on Portland Isle, Dorset, England. The son of Richard and Ann Hutchings. Henry married Mary Pearce Stone on Portland in 1858, and is recorded as a blacksmith there in 1861. In 1871 he was a marine engine driver, and by 1881 was a blacksmith in the USA, where he remained and died in 1908..  
KEIR James Blacksmith 1820 James Keir, blacksmith and soldier. Born in 1820 in Fife, Scotland. The son of James and Mary Keir. In May 1841 he joined the Royal Sappers Co. ( later Royal Engineers ) as a blacksmith. He married Hannah Knowles at Greenwich, London in 1850 and was discharged at Weymouth, Dorset in 1864 after 23 years of service. In 1871 he was a blacksmith at Portland Prison. He died at Brentford, Middlesex in 1879..

LATIMER Charles Blacksmith 1845 Charles Latimer, blacksmith. Born in 1845 at Brompton in Kent, England. The son of John a carpenter and Sarah Latimer. In 1961, aged 15 Charles was a blacksmith on Portland Isle and in 1871 at Reforme on Portland. In 1872 he enlisted in the Royal Engineers as a blacksmith & farrier. He married Sarah Comben on Portland in 1873. By 1891 he was a Quarter Master Sergeant in the Royal Engineers but was discharged in 1893. He died in Kent in 1928..

William was aged 20 a blacksmith when he married Ann Hutchings on Portland in December 1852, but nothing more could be found. I suspect William and his wife both set sail for pastures new..

He married Ann Attwool on Portland in 1829 and is recorded as a blacksmith there in the census returns of 1841 and 1871. He died at Easton, Portland in November 1875..  
PEARCE Thomas Blacksmith 1815 Thomas Pearce, blacksmith. Born in 1815 on Portland Isle, Dorset, England. The son of John and Alice Pearce. In 1841 census Thomas is listed as a blacksmith on Portland. He married Susanna Sansom on Portland in 1845. He then appears as a yeoman farmer until 1871 when he is again described as a blacksmith on Portland, and a retired blacksmith in 1891. He died in June 1891..  
PEARCE Thomas Blacksmith 1847 Thomas Pearce, blacksmith. Born in 1847 on Portland Isle, Dorset, England. The son of Abraham and Catherine Pearce. In 1861 aged 13 he was an apprentice blacksmith on Portland. Thomas married Martha Sansom in Weymouth, Dorset in 1868. In 1871 he was living at Paddington, London as a police constable, before joining the prison service as a warder on Portland in 1881 and 1891. He resumed working as a blacksmith on Portland in 1901 and he died on Portland in 1919.  
PEARCE William Lowman Blacksmith 1840 William Lowman Pearce, blacksmith. Born in 1840 on Portland Isle, Dorset, England. The son of John and Rebecca Pearce. Recorded as a blacksmith on Portland in 1861 and 1871. William married Susanna Marwood Pearce in Weymouth, Dorset in October 1879 and continued working as a blacksmith on Portland until he died there in January 1892..

Recorded as a blacksmith and wheelwright at Powerstock, Dorset in 1861. Robert married Martha Ann Childs at Melbury Abbas, Dorset in 1864. He was a blacksmith on Portland in 1871, but in 1881 was a blacksmith at an iron foundry at Fordington, Dorset. He died at Fordington in 1887..  
PEARCE Edward Blacksmith 1865 Edward Pearce Slater, blacksmith. Born in 1865 on Portland Isle, Dorset, England. The son of Edward and Mary Slater. The 1881 census lists him as aged 15, a blacksmith’s apprentice. In 1881 Edward is on Portland, and worked there until he died in January 1900..

Recorded as blacksmith’s apprentice to Thomas Winzar at Broadway, Weymouth in 1841, and a blacksmith on Portland in 1851 and 1861. By 1871 William had moved to work at Mitcham, Surrey and then at Tooting, London in 1881. Died at Wandsworth, London in 1884..  
STONE John Thomas. Blacksmith 1836 John Thomas Stone, blacksmith. Born in 1836 on Portland Isle, Dorset, England. The son of Robert a quarryman and Charlotte Stone. Recorded as a blacksmith’s apprentice aged 14 in 1851. By 1861 John had sailed to Australia where in 1864 he married Johanna Ryan in Victoria. He died there in 1879..  
STRONG Charles Blacksmith 1805 Charles Strong, blacksmith. Born in 1805 at Netherbury, Dorset, England. The son of Joseph and Mary Strong. Charles married Eliza Rendle at Wyke Regis, Dorset in 1830. Recorded as a blacksmith at Wyke Regis in 1841, then on Portland in 1851 and 1861, but is missing from the 1871 census. He died at Wyke Regis in June 1871..  
TALBOT William R. Blacksmith 1838 William R Talbot, blacksmith. Born in 1838 at Radipole, Dorset, England. The son of William a mariner and Elizabeth Talbot. Not found on the 1851 census but in 1861 he was a blacksmith on Portland Isle, Dorset. By 1871 he had become a prison warder on Portland. He married Elizabeth Pearce there in September 1873. He remained a prison warder on Portland until 1911 and died there in 1927..  
TREGLOWN John H. Blacksmith 1844 John H Treglown, blacksmith. Born in 1844 at Redruth, Cornwall, England. The son of William and Maria Treglown. In 1861 he is recorded on Portland Isle, Dorset, England. as a blacksmith, and then moved to the Midlands, marrying Mary A Gibbons in Birmingham in 1865. In 1871 he is recorded at Harborne, Birmingham as a blacksmith, but later in 1891 as an engine smith like his father. He died at Harborne in 1905..

William married Maria Rabry at Redruth in 1844 and brought her to Portland Isle, Dorset, England, were he is recorded as a blacksmith in 1861. By 1871 he had moved away to Harborne, Birmingham where he is recorded as a steam engine smith until noted as retired in 1901, He died in June 1904..

Ambrose married Ann Ayles on Portland in 1840, and is recorded there as a blacksmith from 1841 to 1871. In 1881 he is a blacksmith in Southampton, Hampshire - his death record cannot be found..  
WHITTLE William Blacksmith 1818 William Whittle, blacksmith. Born in 1818 on Portland Isle, Dorset, England. The son of William and Sarah Whittle. William (jnr) married Mary Cady on Portland in 1839 and is recorded as a blacksmith in 1841 and 1851. In 1857 he emigrated to Australia as an assisted immigrant and died there in 1910..  
WILLS Robert Blacksmith 1823 Robert Wills, blacksmith. Born in 1823 at Broadmayne, Dorset, England. The son of William and Jane Wills. Robert married Frances Hutchings on Portland in 1850 and worked there as a blacksmith from the 1840’s until 1881. By 1891 he was a licensed victualler and he died at Castletown, Portland in October 1899..  
WILLS Robert John. Blacksmith 1854 Robert John Wills, aka John blacksmith. Born in 1854 on Portland Isle, Dorset, England. The son of Robert and Frances Wills. Recorded as a blacksmith on Portland in 1871, then spent time as a blacksmith in New Zealand where he married his first wife Julia Hand in 1876. The 1881 UK census shows he had returned to Portland and worked there as a blacksmith. He was next recorded as a licensed victualler in 1901 and 1911 on Portland. Married his second wife Mary Jane Helyear on Portland in 1903 after Julia had died. He died there in 1934..  
WILLIS Richard H. Blacksmith 1855 Richard H Willis, blacksmith. Born in 1855 on Portland Isle, Dorset, England. The son of Robert and Frances Willis. Richard married Fanny Kate Maber on Portland in August 1879. He was recorded as a blacksmith on Portland in both 1871 and 1881, but by 1891 had become a mariner, then a ship’s pilot at Portland port. He died at Portland in 1938..  
WINZAR Henry Blacksmith 1853 Henry Winzar, blacksmith. Born in 1853 at Broadway, Dorset, England. The son of James a blacksmith and Elizabeth Winzar. Henry worked as a groom aged 17 in 1871 and married Elizabeth Board in Weymouth, Dorset in 1880. Recorded as a blacksmith on Portland Isle in 1881 and 1891, as a labourer in 1901 and a retired blacksmith in 1911. He died living in Weymouth in October 1915..
