BILES William (2) Blacksmith 1831 William Biles (2), blacksmith, & military blacsksmith. Born about 1831 & Baptised at Nettlecombe, Powerstock, Dorset. Died 25th January 1920 age 89yrs and buried in Portsmouth, Hampshire. Before enlistment as a Gunner in the Royal Marines 30 January 1854 at Portsmouth, it is stated on his Naval Records that he was a blacksmith. See also the Military Blacksmiths Index..  
BISHOP Luke Blacksmith 1827 Luke Bishop, blacksmith. Born 1st July 1827 in Yetminster, Dorset, England. The 1851 census lists Luke as 24 years old, a blacksmith lodging at Fox Inn, Plush with the victualler Henry Kingman and his wife. In 1851 Like married Sarah Dicker and between 1851 and 1872 14 children are listed as theirs. By 1861 the family had moved to the village of Henstridge, Somerset where Luke worked as a blacksmith. Luke was still working as a blacksmith aged 64 in Henstridge at the time of the 1891 census. He died there on 7th June 1891. Also listed in the Blacksmiths of Somerset Index..  
BOWDITCH David Marsh Blacksmith 1854 David Marsh Bowditch, blacksmith. Born in 1854 in Beaminster, Dorset, England. The 1871 census lists David as a blacksmith's apprentice to Thomas Draper at Piddletrenthide, Dorset. In 1879 he married Emma Whatley in Christchurch, Dorset, and in 1881 he was a blacksmith at Petworth, Sussex and died there aged 35 in 1889..  
BROWN Solomon Blacksmith 1818 Solomon Brown, blacksmith, farrier. Born 1818 in Beaminster Dorset, he enlisted in the Army (10th Hussars) at Dorchester as a blacksmith on the 24th December 1839 and he achieved the rank of Farrier Major, serving in the East Indies and The Crimea, and was in service for a total of 24 years 55 days. IN 1861 George is 11yrs, living with his mother Harriet 47yrs, widow at Faulkland, Somerset, England. Sisters: Anne 19yrs; Ketrerah 15yrs; Elizabeth Greenhand 69yrs (Mother) & Mary Ann Newmon 2yrs, granddaughter. In1871 George was a blacksmith at Milton Abbas. He married Ruth D Churchill there in 1875. He was a farm labourer there in 1881, is missing in 1891, and a farm foreman at Milton Abbas in 1901, but then a blacksmith again there in 1911, before he dies there in 1925..

Joined Royal Navy in May 1884 aged 15, but by 1891 was back working as a blacksmith at Puncknowle with his father John. Married Adele Thorner at Puncknowle in June 1892, and remained there as a blacksmith to 1939. He died at Puncknowle in 1955..  
CHILCOTT Robert Blacksmith 1812 Robert Chilcott, blacksmith. Born in 1812 at Affpuddle, Dorset, England. The son of Thomas and Elizabeth Chilcott. Robert married Emily Dunning at Affpuddle in March 1837, and was a blacksmith there in 1841. By 1851 and then again in 1861 he was a blacksmith at Milton Abbas, Dorset, before moving to Wareham, Dorset in 1871 and 1881, and he died there in December 1887..  
CHILDS Alfred Blacksmith 1872 Alfred Childs, blacksmith. Born in 1872 at Evershot, Dorset, England. The son of Henry and Caroline Childs. In 1891 aged 19 Alfred was working with his father as blacksmith at Charmouth, Dorse. He married Ruth Clarke at Enfield, Middlesex in 1898. Alfred returned to Charmouth as a blacksmith from 1901 to 1939 by which time he was a master blacksmith. He died at Charmouth in 1940..

Aged 16 he was apprentice blacksmith at Evershot, and at some point he married Caroline Barratt. He was blacksmith at Melbury Osmund, Dorset in 1871, at Burlestone, Dorset in 1881, before his wife Caroline died in 1887. He married Eliza Sansom at Brighton, Sussex in 1888, then was blacksmith at Charmouth, Dorset in 1891 and 1901. By 1911 he was retired living at Chetnole, Dorset and died back at Charmouth in April 1920..

He was apprentice blacksmith to his father at Chetnole, Dorset aged 14yrs in 1841, and then married Anna Jeans at Thornford, Dorset in 1849. Was a blacksmith at Chetnole in 1851, at Leigh, Dorset in 1861, and back at Chetnole in 1871. At some point then they sailed to New Zealand where he died in June 1907. His wife Anna died there in 1922 aged 93..

Samuel is recorded as a blacksmith with his father at Chetnole in 1861, but then there are no further records and is missing in 1871. Did he sail before James to New Zealand, although I found no such records, and then his brother follow after 1871?.  
CLARKE Albert Herbert Blacksmith 1861 Albert Clarke, blacksmith. Born in 1861 at Affpuddle, Dorset, England. Son of John and Dinah Clarke. Albert married Caroline Ozzard in Weymouth, Dorset Oct. 1884, she died in 1893. Albert then married Jane Rod at Weymouth on Jan. 1895. Recorded as blacksmith's apprentice to Thomas Winzar (born 1821) at Broadway, Dorset in 1881, a blacksmith at Weymouth, Dorset in 1891 and 1901, but by 1911 is a ship's marine engineer. Ship's crew lists show he was an engineer on ships working out of Weymouth, Dorset from 1890 to 1914. Nothing further found..

Recorded as a blacksmith's apprentice at Broadway, Dorset in 1881, as a blacksmith at Lytchett Minster, Dorset 1891 and 1901, but by 1911 was a tramway blacksmith in Bournemouth, Dorset. Died at Christchurch, Dorset in 1946..  
CLIFT John Warry Blacksmith 1816 John Warry Clift, blacksmith. Born in 1816 in Crewkerne, Somerset, England. The son of John and Mary Ann Clift, he was working with his father at Crewkerne in 1841, but by 1851 had also moved to Broadwindsor in Dorset. However, in 1860 he emigrated to Canada where he continued working as a blacksmith until he died in Manitoba in 1891..

The son of William Warry Clift with whom he is recorded working as a blacksmith at Broadwindsor in 1861 and 1871. By 1876 he too had emigrated to York, Ontario in Canada where he continued to work as a blacksmith until he died there in 1902..

John Coffin was my great-great grandfather; he was a blacksmith in Holwell (which was part of Somerset until 1844 when it was switched to Dorset). John died 1882. Solomon was a journeyman blacksmith at East Coker, Somerset in 1851, at Beaminster, Dorset in 1861, back at East Coker in 1871, then settled as a blacksmith at Bridport, Dorset in 1881 and 1891 and he died there in 1893..

Recorded aged 17 a blacksmith’s apprentice at Chaldon Herring in 1851 and as a blacksmith there in 1961. In 1864 and 1871 he was a blacksmith at Portesham, then at Lychett Minster, Dorset in 1881, but by 1891 he was working as a farm labourer through to when he died at Winfrith Newburgh in 1917..  
COX John Blacksmith 1810 John Cox, blacksmith. Born in 1810 at Winfrith Newburgh, Dorset, England. The son of Joseph and Hannah Cox. Married Mary Ann Hibbs at Winfrith Newburgh in 1831, but she died there in March 1845. He then married Eliza Cridge there in 1846, but she then died in 1877, and finally he married Louisa Grant there in 1878. He was a blacksmith at Winfrith Newburgh in 1841 and 1851, and at Moreton, Dorset in 1861. By 1871 he had retired as a blacksmith and died at Winfrith Newburgh in 1893..  
CURE George William Blacksmith 1802 George William Cure, blacksmith. Born in 1802 at Steeple, Dorset, England. The son of William Cure and his wife Mary Ann Winzar. I do not know if William was a blacksmith but George is recorded as a blacksmith at Steeple from 1841 to 1861 and he died there in 1867. His sons Thomas and Cornelius were both blacksmiths whilst his daughter Emma married James Smith a blacksmith in Wiltshire..  
CURE Thomas Blacksmith 1832 Thomas Cure, blacksmith. Born in 1832 at Steeple, Dorset, England. The son of Thomas and Elizabeth Cure. Recorded as a blacksmith from 1851 with his father until 1901 by which time he had retired. Died at Steeple in 1903..  
CURTIS Charles Blacksmith 1801 Charles Curtis, blacksmith, farmer. Born in 1801 in Buckland Newton, Dorset. Charles was the son of James Curtis (1769 - 1838) and his wife Ann Bridle. Married Ann Foot at Buckland in 1828, and recorded at Rue near Buckland blacksmith from 1841 to 1871 by which time he was also a farmer. The 1881 census lists him at Cerne Abbas Workhouse former blacksmith and pauper. Died at Buckland April 1885. His brother George born in 1797 was also a blacksmith, farrier..

Married Elizabeth Ellen Marchant at Sherborne, Dorset in 1898, and recorded as blacksmith at Cerne Abbas in 1901 and 1911. He died at Cerne Abbas, Dorset in 1947..

Married Frances Hodges at Wyke Regis, Dorset in 1842, when he was then also recorded in Pigot's Directory as a blacksmith at Cerne Abbas, Dorset - was a blacksmith there until 1881, then recorded as retired blacksmith there - he died at Maiden Newton, Dorset in June 1900. His son Thomas was also a blacksmith.  
CURTIS George Blacksmith 1830 George Curtis, blacksmith, farrier. Born in March 1830 in Buckland Newton, Dorset. George was a son of George and Mary Ann Curtis. He married Ann Lovelace at Buckland Newton Nov. 1861. Recorded as blacksmith and farrier 1851 to 1871 at Buckland Newton, and died there June 1875. His brother James Curtis was also a blacksmith. Both are also listed in the farriers’ index..

Recorded as blacksmith at Cerne Abbas, Dorset from 1871 to 1911. He died at Cerne Abbas aged 91 in 1939. His son Charles Curtis (1878-1947) was also a blacksmith.

The 1841 UK census lists him as 25yrs, lodging with blacksmith ChristopherType and family at ?Charmont Lane, Lyme Regis, Dorset. I have no other information. 1851: John Denslow (Snr) was a Mechanic at Flax Mills, Greenham, Crewkerne; wife Mary 33yrs. Children: Catherine 8yrs; Elizabeth 7yrs; John 2yrs. Lodger: John Stanton 29yrs,widower (mill foreman). 1861: John 49yrs, a widower, and is now a blacksmith, at Membury, Devon with his daughter Elizabeth Type 17yrs(flax reeler); sons John (Jnr) 12yrs and William 6yrs. John is listed in Blacksmiths of Dorset and Whitesmiths Indexes..

Samuel was a farm labourer aged 14 in 1861, then a journeyman blacksmith at Fordington, Dorset in 1871, and at Tolpuddle, Dorset in 1881, where he died in August 1884..  
DRAPER Thomas Blacksmith 1838 Thomas Draper, blacksmith, farmer. Born in 1838 at Alton Pancras, Dorset, England. Thomas is recorded as a blacksmith at Piddletrenthide, Dorset in 1861 employing 2 men, in 1871 employing 2 men and 4 apprentices and in 1881. He then became a farmer. Thomas died at Moreton, Dorset in April 1922..  
EDON (HAYDON) Frederick Blacksmith 1858 Frederick Edon or Haydon, blacksmith, wheelwright. Born illegitimate in 1858, the son of a widow who registered him as Frederick Lee HEYDON. From census data, he appears to have been fostered out immediately (Frederick EDON, "visitor" aged 3yrs in 1861). By 1871 he was apprenticed as a Wheelwright in Okehampton. By his own story he ran away from his apprenticeship to join the Army. I cannot find him in 1881. In 1885 he married in Wimborne, Dorset, but his wife Eliza Ann Cross died in pregnancy. By now he was using the HAYDON spelling. In 1888 he married my great-grandmother Kate Ann Plowman in Southampton - her father George Plowman was also a blacksmith. Frederick moved back to Wimborne for a year or two with Kate, and then they settled in Poole, Dorset. Frederick apparently died in 1912. See also, Wheelwrights Index.. Contact Unknown

The 1851 UK census lists him as 50yrs, living in the Village, Chardstock, Dorset; with wife Sarah 51yrs (born Memby, Devon). Children listed: Sarah Ann 22yrs; Eliza 20yrs; Emmanuel 16yrs; Elizabeth 14yrs; Thomas 11yrs.

Recorded as an apprentice blacksmith aged 14 to his father in 1911 at Milton Abbas, Dorset and married Olive Bagg at Bridport, Dorset in 1923. In 1939 was master blacksmith at Milton Abbas, and he died at Tarrant Monkton, Dorset in 1981..

Was a blacksmith there in 1861 and 1871 before moving to Holdenhurst, Dorset in 1881. Is missing in 1891 and died at Christchurch, Dorset in 1898..

Aged 17 recorded as a blacksmith with his father at Affpuddle, Dorset in 1881, and in May 1889 he married Kate Edmonds at Bere Regis, Dorset, listed as a blacksmith. Then working as a poultry farmer at Affpuddle in 1891, a farm bailiff in Sussex in 1901, and died in hospital in London of tuberculosis in 1904.

GEORGE John Blacksmith 1821 John George, blacksmith. Born (needs checking)1st August 1821, Puddleton, Dorset, England. Lack of records prevent futher evidence but John possibly was the son of Labourer George George and Sarah George and who died ( maybe an accident at the forge ) and was buried at Moreton, Dorset where the parents were then living in November 1845. The 1841 census lists John as aged 20, an apprentice blacksmith to Edward Thomas at Hilton, Dorset. John is missing from the 1851 census..  
GILL Thomas.A. Blacksmith 1860 Thomas A Gill, blacksmith. Born in 1860 at Sherborne, Dorset, England. Son of George and Ann Gill. In the 1881census he is recorded as a blacksmith's apprentice to Thomas Draper at Piddletrenthide, Dorset, but then appears to join the Army serving in India. Absent from 1891 and 1901 census returns, but in 1911 is an Army pensioner and gardener in Torquay, Devon. Died at Newton Abbot, Devon in 1927..

Recorded as a blacksmith with Walter H Evans at Milton Abbas, Dorset in 1901. Charles married Bessie Warr at Barwick in 1905. Then recorded as a blacksmith at Yeovil Somerset in 1911 and 1921, and he died there in 1969..

In 1861 and 1871 he is listed just as a farmer, and he died at Glanvilles Wootton in January 1881..

In 1891 John was listed as a retired blacksmith back at Corfe Castle, Dorset where he died in 1893..

In 1832 he was moved under Poor Law rules from Shipton Gorge to Whitchurch Canonicorum, Dorset. In 1841 he was at the Bradpole, Dorset Union workhouse, noted as a blacksmith, with his father Joseph, but in 1851 was working for Charles Hale as blacksmith at Moreton, Dorset. He died at Bridport, Dorset in 1855..

GUPPY Henry Blacksmith 1802 Henry Guppy, blacksmith. Born in 1802 in Pulham, Dorset. He is recorded at Dorchester Prison 1. 11. 1821 aged 19 a blacksmith for "desertion" sentence 2 months released January 1822. Henry is recorded at Buckland Newton, Dorset as a blacksmith from 1841 to 1861 and he died in July 1865 at Buckland. His wife was (possibly) Ann Sheppard, married 23rd January 1829..  
GUY Albert J. Blacksmith 1840 Albert J. Guy, blacksmith. Born in 1840 at Milton Abbas, Dorset, England. The son of James and Jane Guy. Albert was a hurdle maker at Milton Abbas in 1861. He married Eliza J Matchem there in 1871. Was then a blacksmith at Milton Abbas from 1871 to 1901 although in later years had also become a farmer too. By 1911 he was a retired blacksmith and small holder at Milton Abbas, and he died there in June 1918..

He married Susannah Gordon in London in 1869. Was then a farrier at London, Marylebone in 1871, and an unemployed farrier at London, Fulham in 1881. In 1891 he was recorded as a blacksmith and farrier in the Marylebone Infirmary, and he died there in 1897..

Recorded as blacksmith aged 19 with his father at Moreton, Dorset in 1851, his occupation in 1861 is unclear, and was a grocer at Tincleton, Dorset in 1871, then a shop keeper at Lychett Matravers, Dorset in 1881. He died there in June 1881..

Was a butcher’s boy in 1861, and then married Mary A Roberts at Beaminster, Dorset in 1869. Alfred was a blacksmith working with the widowed Elizabeth Roberts at Evershot, Dorset in 1871, and a master blacksmith there in 1881. He was a blacksmith and farmer at East Chelborough, Dorset in 1891, before his wife Mary died in 1898. In November that year, he married Adelaide Trim at East Chelborough, before moving to Stanton Drew, Somerset in 1901 as a blacksmith and inn keeper. He was a blacksmith at West Chelborough, Dorset in 1911, at Symondsbury, Dorset in 1921, and died there in 1933..  
HALLETT Arthur Blacksmith 1872 Arthur Hallett, blacksmith. Born in 1872 at Evershot, Dorset, England. The son of Alfred and Mary Hallett. Aged 18 he was working as a blacksmith with his father Alfred at East Chelborough, Dorset in 1891, before he married Florence Neal at Beaminster, Dorset in 1896. Moved to Portslade, Sussex as blacksmith by 1901, and then to Hackey, London as a farrier in 1911 and 1921. He died at Hackney in 1939..

Recoded as apprentice blacksmith to Thomas Winzar (born 1821) at Broadway, Dorset in 1871, and as a blacksmith at Portsea, Hampshire in 1881, but he died there in Sept. 1889..  
HARVEY Francis Blacksmith 1820 Francis Harvey, blacksmith. Born in 1820 in Affpuddle, Dorset, England. Francis is recorded as a blacksmith at Piddletrenthide, Dorset in 1841, maybe working for James Baker. Missing from 1851 census and in 1861 is a patient at Dorchester Hospital, occupation blacksmith, but no further records were found for him..  
HATCHARD John George. Blacksmith 1827 John George Hatchard, blacksmith. Born in 1827at Corfe Castle, Dorset, England. The son of James an agricultural labourer and Elizabeth Hatchard. Married Susannah Mulzard in Canada in 1851, and was still there in 1866, but in 1871 is recorded as a blacksmith at Studland, Dorset. He died on Brownsea Island, Dorset in 1879..  
HAWKINS William Blacksmith 1891 William Hawkins, blacksmith. Born ?year at Owermogne, Dorset, England. The son of John and Sarah Hawkins. Recorded as a blacksmith at Milborne St Andrew in 1891 but not seen in census for1901. In 1906 and 1907 he is found guilty of larceny sentenced to 6 and 3 months in prison - also using an alias Walter Hawkins, but then nothing further was found about him..  
HAYDON (EDON) Frederick Blacksmith 1858 Frederick Haydon or Edon, blacksmith, wheelwright. Born illegitimate in 1858, the son of a widow who registered him as Frederick Lee HEYDON. From census data, he appears to have been fostered out immediately (Frederick EDON, "visitor" aged 3yrs in 1861). By 1871 he was apprenticed as a Wheelwright in Okehampton. By his own story he ran away from his apprenticeship to join the Army. I cannot find him in 1881. In 1885 he married in Wimborne, Dorset, but his wife Eliza Ann Cross died in pregnancy. By now he was using the HAYDON spelling. In 1888 he married my great-grandmother Kate Ann Plowman in Southampton - her father George Plowman was also a blacksmith. Frederick moved back to Wimborne for a year or two with Kate, and then they settled in Poole, Dorset. Frederick apparently died in 1912. See also, Wheelwrights Index.. Contact Unknown

HAYNE Richard Blacksmith 1796 Richard Hayne, blacksmith. Born in 1796 at Portesham, Dorset. The son of John and Dorothy Hayne. Married Margaret Russell at Portseham in 1827. In 1841 was publican at the Half Moon Inn at Portesham. In 1851 recorded as a blacksmith in Portesham - but I wonder if that was an error as in 1861, he is inn keeper at the Half Moon Inn again. In 1871 he was a farmer at Portesham, and he died there in 1880.  
HAYNE Silvester Blacksmith 1840 Silvester Hayne, blacksmith. Born in 1840 at Portesham, Dorset. The son of Richard and Margaret Hayne. Was working with his father as a blacksmith at Portesham in 1861, but by 1871 had taken over as inn keeper of the Half Moon Inn and a baker. Then moved to Lancashire as a baker in 1881 and in 1891 and 1901 was still in Lancashire as a cab proprietor and driver, where he died in 1908..  
HAYNE Thomas Blacksmith 1808 Thomas Hayne, blacksmith. Born in 1808 at Portesham, Dorset. Son of John Hayne & Dorothy Bartlett. Thomas married Elizabeth Hodder at Portesham in 1835. Worked as blacksmith at Portesham in 1841 and 1851, at Winterbourne Abbas, Dorset in 1861, at Melcombe Regis, Dorset in 1871 and at Winterbourne Abbas in 1881 and had retired in 1891. He died there in March 1901..  
HILL George Blacksmith 1857 George Hill, blacksmith. Born in 1857 at Monksilver, Somerset, England. The son of Walter an Inn Keeper and his wife Jane Hill. Aged 13 he is recorded in 1871 as a servant to the Rector of Monksilver. I cannot find a marriage to his first wife Emma but was a widower when he married Mary Harriet Green in Broadwindsor, Dorset in 1897. In 1881 he was a blacksmith at Yeovil, Somerset, and then at Studland, Dorset in 1891. By the time of his marriage in 1897, he had moved to Winton, Hampshire as a gas fitter and he died there in June 1903..  
HILLIAR William Blacksmith 1818 William Hilliar, blacksmith. Born in 1818 at Horsington, Somerset, England. Son of Mark and Harriet Hilliar. William married Anne Hunt at Sherborne, Dorset, England in 1840. Recorded as a blacksmith at Alton Pancras, Dorset,in 1851, but by 1861 had moved to the Poole, Dorset area where he remained a blacksmith until 1901 by which time he had retired. He died at Poole in 1903..

He died at Portsea in October1878..

In 1911 Melville aged 19 years, was apprentice blacksmith to his father at Hilton. He then served in the Royal Marines during World War One. At the end of the war, he joined the Dorset Police, and in 1920 he married Edith Atkins at Corfe Mullen, Dorset. He retired from the police force at Studland, Dorset in 1947 after 28 years’ service, and died at Sturminster Newton, Dorset in 1969..

In 1901 and 1911 he was both a blacksmith and an inn keeper at the Drax Arms, Bere Regis, Dorset. He died at Wareham, Dorset in July 1926..  
KEVERN Albert Henry Blacksmith 1882 Albert Henry Kevern, blacksmith. Born in 1882 at Portland, Dorset , England. Son of Thomas and Mary Ann Kevern. Albert married Rose F Palmer at Portland in 1904 and is recorded as a blacksmith at Portland with his father in 1901, as a blacksmith's striker at H.M. Dockyard, Portland in 1911 and in 1939 as a blacksmith's hammerman at H.M. Torpedo Range at Portland, Dorset. He died in 1963..  
KEVERN Thomas Blacksmith 1842 Thomas Kevern, blacksmith. Born in 1842 near Helston, Cornwall. Thomas married Mary Ann Bragg at Portsea, Hampshire in 1873 whilst serving in the Royal Navy. In 1861 is recorded as blacksmith on HMS Royal Adelaide at River Tamar in Cornwall, and served on various ships as blacksmith until May 1885. In 1891 and 1901 is a blacksmith at Portland, Dorset, and a Naval Pensioner there in 1911 - he died there in 1916. His son Albert Henry was also a blacksmith with links to the Royal Navy..

IS recorded as an apprentice blacksmith at Broadway, Dorset in 1901, and blacksmith there in 1911. In 1917 is a Sergeant in the Dorsetshire Regiment, but back in Broadway, Dorset in 1921. Died there in 1976..

Was blacksmith at Sherborne, Dorset in 1861 and Lyme Regis, Dorset in 1871, then a whitesmith at Axminster, Devon in 1881 and Dorchester, Dorset in 1891. By 1901 he had retired and was living with his son in Surrey where he died in 1913..

Henry married Dorothy Clarke at Bere Regis, Dorset in 1807 and is recorded as a blacksmith at Affpuddle, Dorset in 1816 on the baptism of their son William, and at Studland, Dorset in 1841 and 1851. He died there in July 1856. There is no indication his father John was a blacksmith..

Aged 15 was apprentice blacksmith to James Childs at Chetnole, Dorset in 1851, and married Elizabeth J Keynes at Hazelbury Bryan, Dorset in 1857. Was then a blacksmith at Glanvilles Wootton, Dorset from 1861 to 1901. Missing from the 1911 census, he died there in 1916..

The 1841 census lists Richard as a blacksmith at Piddletrenthide, Dorset. He is missing from 1851 and 1861 census returns. Believed to have died in the Union Workhouse at Weymouth, Dorset 14. 2. 1865.

Was a blacksmith at Bradford Abbas, Dorset from 1871 to 1891, but then became a farmer at Glanvilles Wootton in 1901 and 1911, where he died in 1928..

MAIDMENT Archibald Blacksmith 1882 Archibald Maidment, blacksmith, farrier. Bornin 1882 at Yeovil, Somerset, England. The son of Edward and Lucy Maidment. Recorded as a blacksmith with Walter H Evans at Milton, Abbas, Dorset in 1901. May have also served as a shoeing smith in 2nd Boer War in South Africa which ended in May 1902. In 1906, whilst serving in the Army at Kildare, Ireland he married Anna Kate Francis at Yeovil, noted as a shoeing smith. By 1911 he was a Corporal in Royal Field Artillery as a farrier. Anna Kate died in 1918 and in September 1919 he married Eliza Crowther at Depwade, Norfolk. He was a farrier in Norfolk in 1939, and died at Norwich, Norfolk in 1950..

She was single in 1871, and I found no further records for her after 1871..

MITCHELL Bertram A. Blacksmith 1897 Bertram A. Mitchell, blacksmith. Born in 1897 at Milton Abbas, Dorset, England. The son of Lawrence and Miriam Mitchell. In 1911 aged 14yrs Bertram was apprentice blacksmith to his father at Swanage, Dorset but then applied to join the Royal Navy but was discharged within a year as unfit. Then appears to have joined the Merchant Navy during World War One, and married Edith Cockerell in Weymouth, Dorset in 1928. He died in Weymouth in 1980..

Recorded as a blacksmith at Milton Abbas, Dorset in 1841 and 1851, but then a farmer at Woodland, Dorset in 1861, before returning as a blacksmith at Milton Abbas in 1871 and 1881. He died there in March 1886..

John had retired by 1911 and died at Hazelbury Bryan in September 1914..

Robert married Ann Gale at Winterbourne Kingston, Dorset in 1828, and by 1841 was a journeyman blacksmith at Winterbourne Kingston and remained working there until, by 1881, he had retired. He died there in October 1883, but his sons John and William were both blacksmiths..

Recorded as blacksmith’s apprentice to Robert Pullman at Evershot, Dorset in 1841. He married Catherine Stephens at Melbury Osmund, Dorset in June 1843. Recorded first as blacksmith at Evershot in 1851, at Caundle Stourton, Dorset in 1861, but then became a farmer at Caundle Marsh in 1871, at Hazelbury Bryan in 1881 and 1891, and by 1901 had retired living at Caundle Purse, Dorset. He died at Hazelbury Bryan in March 1905..

PULMAN Jane Blacksmith 1837 Jane Bow Pulman, blacksmith. Born in 1837 at Evershot, Dorse, England. The daughter of blacksmiths Robert and Jane Pulman. The census lists of 1851 and 1861 give no clues if Jane was working as a blacksmith with her parents but it seems likely, as from 1871 to 1911 she is described as a blacksmith and farmer at Evershot. She was unmarried and died at Evershot in March 1912..

Joseph is recorded working for Henry Childs as blacksmith at Charmouth, Dorset in 1901, then working at Broadwindsor, Dorset in 1911. In April 1920 he was noted as a blacksmith on marrying Flora Watts at Beaminster, Dorset, but still working at Broadwinsor in 1921. In 1939 he was a master blacksmith at Beaminster, where he died in 1958..

In April 1872 he married Emily Jane Read at Melbury Osmund, Dorset and they lived at Stockwood, Dorset in 1881. Emily died in 1882, and in 1883 Thomas married Eliza Jane Hadgley at Islington, London.He was still a blacksmith at Yetminster, Dorset in 1891, but then was a farmer there in 1901 and 1911. He died at Yetminster in 1932..

He died at Melcombe Regis in April 1901..

VOSS William Blacksmith 1808 William Voss, blacksmith. Born in 1808 at West Knighton, Dorset, England. Son of George and Ruth Voss. William married Lucy Drake at West Knighton, Dorset in 1836. Recorded as a blacksmith at Broadmayne, Dorset from 1841 to 1881, by which time he was retired. Died there in 1883. His son George was also a blacksmith..  
VYE Andew.W. Blacksmith 1872 Andrew W. Vye, blacksmith. Born in 1872 at Briantspuddle, Dorset , England. The son of William and Mary Vye. Aged 19 he was apprenticed to Henry Gillett at Moreton, Dorset in 1891, but by 1901 was working as a farm labourer at Affpuddle. He died there in 1905..  
WAITE Acquilla Blacksmith 1870 Acquilla Waite, blacksmith. Born in 1870 at Horton, Gloucestershire, England. Son of John and Sarah Waite. Married Alice Kate Perry at Frome, Somerset in Jan. 1897. Recorded as a blacksmith at Horton, Glos. in 1891 and 1901, at Broadway, Dorset in 1911 and 1921. In 1915 was in the Army serving in the Royal Engineers. Died at Broadway, Dorsey in April 1959..  
WALLIS John Blacksmith 1823 John Wallis, blacksmith. Born in 1823 at Langton Herring, Dorset. The son of Richard and Elizabeth Wallis. Married Joanna Hayne at Portesham, Dorset in 1846. Recorded as blacksmith at Portesham in 1841 aged 16, then a farm labourer in 1851, then a blacksmith at Portesham from 1861 to 1901 by which time he had retired and he died there in 1908..

Charles is recorded aged 20 as a blacksmith with his father at South Stoneham, Hampshire in 1881, but no further records could be found. May have died in Hampshire in 1915..

Charles was apprentice blacksmith with his father at Tolpuddle in 1841, and married Jane Spicer there in 1846. Worked there as blacksmith until 1891. In 1891 he was blacksmith at Cerne Abbas, Dorset but had retired by 1911, and died at Cerne Abbas in February 1915..  
WAY Charles Uriah. Blacksmith 1860 Charles Uriah Way, blacksmith. Born in 1860 at Tolpuddle, Dorset, England. The son of Charles and Jane Way. Charles worked with his father at Tolpuddle as a blacksmith in 1881, and was recorded as a blacksmith when he married Sarah J Jeorrett in London in October 1885. Was a blacksmith then at Kinson, Dorset in 1891, but is then missing from further records, so did they go abroad?.  
WAY Edwin H. Blacksmith 1867 Edwin H Way, blacksmith. Born in 1867 at Milborne St Andrew, Dorset, England. The son of Samuel and Jane Way. Edwain was scholar in 1881, but by 1891 was blacksmith with his father at Milborne Stileham, Dorset through to 1921. In 1939 was a retired blacksmith and he died at Milborne Stileham in 1955..

Frederick married Ethel Ada Payne in Dorchester, Dorset in 1912 and recorded as blacksmith with his father at Piddlehinton in 1911 and 1921. Died at Weymouth in Jan. 1950..

Was working as a blacksmith at Bradley, Surrey in 1891 and 1901, and at Epsom, Surrey in 1911 and 1921, where he died in 1924..  
WAY James Blacksmith 1826 James Way, blacksmith. Born in 1826 at Piddlehinton, Dorset, England. Son of George and Jane Way. James married Hannah Prior at Piddlehinton in 1851 and is recorded as a blacksmith at Piddlehinton from 1851 to 1871. In 1881 he was a master blacksmith at South Stoneham, Hampshire and died on the Isle of Wight in March 1891. Sons Charles and John were also blacksmiths.

In October 1906 when he married Ada E Stone at Melksham, Somerset he was a shunter at Trowbridge, Wiltshire, then at Bristol, Somerset in 1911 - he died there in 1935..

Was then blacksmith at Milborne Stileham, Dorset from 1871 to 1911 by which time he had retired and was recorded as blind. He died there in 1908..

Then was blacksmith at Canford, Dorset in 1861, an engine smith at Poole, Dorset in 1871 and at Ringwood, Hampshire in 1881, a foreman of smiths back at Poole in 1891 and a blacksmith there in 1901 - he had retired by 1911, and died at Parkstone, Dorset in 1919..  
WAY Thomas.D. Blacksmith 1857 Thomas D Way, blacksmith. Born in 1857 at Poole, Dorset, England. The son of William and Eliza Way. Apprenticed aged 14 to his father at Wimborne, Dorset in 1871, and working there in 1881. When he married Sophia E Ridout in Holt, Dorset in June 1884 he is noted as a blacksmith. Was still working as a blacksmith at Wimborne in 1891, and he died there in May 1897..

Aged 16 was blacksmith with his father at Tolpuddle in 1861 and again in 1871. Married Jane Robins at Tolpuddle in February 1881, and then worked as blacksmith at Tincleton, Dorset from 1881 to 1921 - he died there in April 1932..

WAY William B. Blacksmith 1833 William B Way, blacksmith. Born in 1833 at Tolpuddle. Dorset, England. The son of Thomas and Christian Way. Was a blacksmith aged 17 with his father at Tolpuddle in 1851, before he married Emily J Does at Tolpuddle in 1856. Was blacksmith at Cheselborne, Dorset in 1861, then at Wimborne, Dorset from 1871 to 1891. He is missing from the 1901 census, maybe he was ill, as he died at Southampton, Hampshire in June 1902..  
WENMOUTH David J. Blacksmith 1873 David J Wenmouth, blacksmith. Born 1873 in Donegal, Ireland. Son of James and Eliza Wenmouth. James was born in Pelynt, Cornwall and in the Royal Navy. David was recorded as an apprentice blacksmith at Alton Pancras Dorset in 1891 ( maybe to Herbert Hyde ), and married Mabel A Ross at Lydlinch, Dorset in April 1897. By 1901 he was a blacksmith at Crewkerne, Somerset through to 1939 and died there in 1948..  
WHITE Frank Blacksmith 1837 Frank White, blacksmith. Born in 1837 at Milborne St Andrew, Dorset, England. He married Rebecca Hicks at Blandford, Dorset in 1862, and is recorded working as a blacksmith at Milton Abbas, Dorset from 1861 to 1881, then at Gussage All Saints, Dorset in 1891, but by 1901 had retired as a blacksmith at Holt, Dorset and died at Church Knowle, Dorset in 1913..  
WHITE James Blacksmith 1861 James White, blacksmith. Born in 1861 at Frampton, Dorset, England. The son of George and Charlotte White. Recorded working as a blacksmith for Thomas Pulman at Yetminster Dorset in 1891. In 1893 he married Adelaide Rayner at Cambridge, Cambridgeshire but by 1901 was back as blacksmith at Hamworthy, Poole, Dorset through to 1921, where he died in May 1940..  
WHITTLE John Cady Blacksmith 1841 John Cady Whittle, blacksmith. Born 1841 Portland Dorset. He worked on the railway as a blacksmith in NSW and QLD. He also worked at Redbank Plains, Queensland for Cribbe and Foote, Ipswich as a blacksmith and in about 1876 settled at Gatton Queensland as a blacksmith. He started one of the first businesses in Gatton. The Whittle family have been in business ever since as blacksmiths, saddlers and hardware merchants (Reference: Book -History of Gatton Shire in Lockyer Valley 1979). Children: Sarah, John, William, Thomas, Mary & Edward. 1841: census shows he was a blacksmith at Portland, Dorset. William, Mary & family emigrated to Wagga Wagga NSW in 1857. He worked as a blacksmith at Newtown NSW. Died 1910 aged 91yrs at Wagga Wagga, NSW. Father of John Cady Whittle (blacksmith). WILLMOTT John N. Blacksmith 1846 John N. Willmott, blacksmith. Born in 1846 at Cerne Abbas, Dorset. England. John married Susan Townsend at Upwey, Dorset in August 1867. Recorded as journeyman blacksmith at Upwey, Dorset in 1871, at Puddletown, Dorset in 1881, at Fordington, Dorset in 1891 when he was a blacksmith and licensed victualler, and at Dorchester, Dorset in 1901 and 1911 as farmer and road contractor. Died at Dorchester in Sept. 1926..  
WINZAR Charles Blacksmith 1839 Charles Winzar, blacksmith. Born in 1839 at Broadway, Dorset, England. Son of Thomas and Harriet Winzar. Charles married Elizabeth Mary Riggs at Upwey, Dorset in Nov. 1861. Recorded as a blacksmith at Fordington, Dorset in 1871 and 1891, and at Broadway, Dorset in 1901. By 1911 he was back at Fordington, Dorset by which time he had retired. He died there in 1914. His son Thomas born in 1864 was also a blacksmith..

WINZAR Ernest Charles Blacksmith 1876 Ernest Charles Winzar, blacksmith. Born in 1876 at Wareham, Dorset, England. Son of Charles and Mary Charlotte Winzar. In 1901 he was working at Portsmouth Naval Dockyard with his father. Married Louisa Emily Parr at Tower Hamlets, London in 1910 and in 1911 was working as a farrier at Limehouse, London. In 1939 he was a farrier at Poplar, London and he died at Poplar in Jan. 1952. Listed in Blacksmiths of Dorset & Hampshire..  
WINZAR Frank Blacksmith 1876 Frank Winzar, blacksmith. Born in 1876 at Wyke Regis, Dorset, England. Son of Thomas and Frances Winzar. Frank trained as an apprentice blacksmith in 1891 at Wyke Regis and described there as a millwright in 1901, but a toolmaker in Lincoln, Lincs. in 1911 and a pipe fitter in Birmingham, Warwicks in 1939, just before he died there.

Thomas married Harriet Porter and is recorded in baptism records in the 1820s and 1830s and the 1841 census as a blacksmith at Broadway, Dorset - died at Broadway in 1850. His sons Charles, James and Thomas were all blacksmiths..

WINZAR Thomas Blacksmith 1849 Thomas Winzar, blacksmith. Born in 1849 at Broadway, Dorset, England. Son of James and Elizabeth Ann Winzar. Thomas married Frances Ann Tizard Blacksmith at Wyke Regis, Dorset in 1869 and is recorded as a blacksmith there in 1871. By 1881 he was a blacksmith but also helping his father at the Fisherman's Arms, and in 1891 had moved to the Wyke Hotel, Wyke Regis but still operating as a blacksmith. In 1901 and 1911 he was just the innkeeper at the Wyke Hotel and died at Wyke in 1932. His sons Frank and William Bailey Winzar were both trained as blacksmiths..

Thomas Hayden married Edith Mary Burt in Weymouth in June 1904. Recorded as a blacksmith in Broadway, Dorset in 1901 but by 1911 was a crane driver at Portland Naval Port, Dorset. Died at Wyke Regis, Dorset in 1954..  
WINZAR William Bailey Blacksmith 1881 William Bailey Winzar, blacksmith. Born in 1881 at Wyke Regis, Dorset, England. Son of Thomas and Frances Winzar and was a blacksmith at Wyke Regis in 1901, but an engine smith in 1911 where I think he worked at Whitehead's Torpedo Works in Weymouth. In the 1939 census, he was described as a master blacksmith. He died in 1969..

Henry married Mary Ann Symonds at Poxwell, Dorset in 1851, and was recorded as blacksmith there that same year, then at Tincleton, Dorset in 1861 and at Moreton, Dorset in 1871, where he was employing 2 men. He died at Moreton in 1877..
