BILES William (2) Blacksmith - Military 1831 William Biles (2), blacksmith. Born about 1831 & Baptised at Nettlecombe, Powerstock, Dorset. Died 25th January 1920 age 89yrs and buried in Portsmouth, Hampshire. Before enlistment as a Gunner in the Royal Marines 30 January 1854 at Portsmouth, it is stated on his Naval Records that he was a blacksmith. See also the Military Blacksmiths Index..  
BISHOP Luke Blacksmith 1827 Luke Bishop, blacksmith. Born 1st July 1827 in Yetminster, Dorset, England. The 1851 census lists Luke as 24 years old, a blacksmith lodging at Fox Inn, Plush with the victualler Henry Kingman and his wife. In 1851 Like married Sarah Dicker and between 1851 and 1872 14 children are listed as theirs. By 1861 the family had moved to the village of Henstridge, Somerset where Luke worked as a blacksmith. Luke was still working as a blacksmith aged 64 in Henstridge at the time of the 1891 census. He died there on 7th June 1891. Also listed in the Blacksmiths of Somerset Index..  
BROWN Solomon Blacksmith & Farrier 1818 Solomon Brown, blacksmith, farrier. Born 1818 in Beaminster Dorset, he enlisted in the Army (10th Hussars) at Dorchester as a blacksmith on the 24th December 1839 and he achieved the rank of Farrier Major, serving in the East Indies and The Crimea, and was in service for a total of 24 years 55 days. On his retirement he went back to Beaminster where he died in 1871. See him also in the Farriers Index and the Military Index..  
CHAPPELL Henry Blacksmith 1859 Henry Chappell, blacksmith. Born about 1859 in Wimborne, Dorset, England. Henry was the sixth child of Moses and Hannah Chappell of Horton near Wimborne. Wife: Elizabeth Mary (nee Young) also born in Wimborne in 1864, the daughter of George & Elizabeth Young. Henry is recorded as a Blacksmith in the 1891 & 1901 censuses and he & Elizabeth were living at 35 Lower Bannister Street, Southampton, Hampshire, England. COFFIN John Blacksmith 1817 John Coffin, blacksmith. Born 1817. Born in ?Somerset. He was a blacksmith from about 1837 until 1881. Wife: Mary Ann nee Willis, married 1844. Children: Jane Ann born 1845, Sarah born 1851, Mary Emma born 1856, James born 1858, Arthur Charles born 1868. Jane Ann was my great-grandmother. John Coffin was my great-great grandfather; he was a blacksmith in Holwell (which was part of Somerset until 1844 when it was switched to Dorset). John died 1882. CURTIS Charles Blacksmith 1801 Charles Curtis, blacksmith, farmer. Born in 1801 in Buckland Newton, Dorset. Charles was the son of James Curtis (1769 - 1838) and his wife Ann Bridle. Married Ann Foot at Buckland in 1828, and recorded at Rue near Buckland blacksmith from 1841 to 1871 by which time he was also a farmer. The 1881 census lists him at Cerne Abbas Workhouse former blacksmith and pauper. Died at Buckland April 1885. His brother George born in 1797 was also a blacksmith, farrier..  
CURTIS George Blacksmith 1830 George Curtis, blacksmith, farrier. Born in March 1830 in Buckland Newton, Dorset. George was a son of George and Mary Ann Curtis. He married Ann Lovelace at Buckland Newton Nov. 1861. Recorded as blacksmith and farrier 1851 to 1871 at Buckland Newton, and died there June 1875. His brother James Curtis was also a blacksmith. Both are also listed in the farriers’ index..

James was a son of George and Mary Ann Curtis and is recorded as a blacksmith and farrier at Buckland Newton from 1861 to 1891. He died at Buckland Newton in Jan. 1900. His brother George was also a blacksmith and farrier. Both are also listed in the farriers’ index..  
DENSLOW John (Snr) Blacksmiths & Whitesmith 1816 John Denslow, whitesmith & blacksmith. Born about 1816, ?place (not in Dorset). The 1841 UK census lists him as 25yrs, lodging with blacksmith ChristopherType and family at ?Charmont Lane, Lyme Regis, Dorset. I have no other information. 1851: John Denslow (Snr) was a Mechanic at Flax Mills, Greenham, Crewkerne; wife Mary 33yrs. Children: Catherine 8yrs; Elizabeth 7yrs; John 2yrs. Lodger: John Stanton 29yrs,widower (mill foreman). 1861: John 49yrs, a widower, and is now a blacksmith, at Membury, Devon with his daughter Elizabeth Type 17yrs(flax reeler); sons John (Jnr) 12yrs and William 6yrs. John is listed in Blacksmiths of Dorset and Whitesmiths Indexes..  
EDON (HAYDON) Frederick Blacksmith & Wheelwright 1858 Frederick Edon or Haydon, blacksmith, wheelwright. Born illegitimate in 1858, the son of a widow who registered him as Frederick Lee HEYDON. From census data, he appears to have been fostered out immediately (Frederick EDON, "visitor" aged 3yrs in 1861). By 1871 he was apprenticed as a Wheelwright in Okehampton. By his own story he ran away from his apprenticeship to join the Army. I cannot find him in 1881. In 1885 he married in Wimborne, Dorset, but his wife Eliza Ann Cross died in pregnancy. By now he was using the HAYDON spelling. In 1888 he married my great-grandmother Kate Ann Plowman in Southampton - her father George Plowman was also a blacksmith. Frederick moved back to Wimborne for a year or two with Kate, and then they settled in Poole, Dorset. Frederick apparently died in 1912. See also, Wheelwrights Index.. Contact Unknown

The 1851 UK census lists him as 50yrs, living in the Village, Chardstock, Dorset; with wife Sarah 51yrs (born Memby, Devon). Children listed: Sarah Ann 22yrs; Eliza 20yrs; Emmanuel 16yrs; Elizabeth 14yrs; Thomas 11yrs.  
GUPPY Henry Blacksmith 1802 Henry Guppy, blacksmith. Born in 1802 in Pulham, Dorset. He is recorded at Dorchester Prison 1. 11. 1821 aged 19 a blacksmith for "desertion" sentence 2 months released January 1822. Henry is recorded at Buckland Newton, Dorset as a blacksmith from 1841 to 1861 and he died in July 1865 at Buckland. His wife was (possibly) Ann Sheppard, married 23rd January 1829..

HOPKINS Hiram Blacksmith 1835 Hiram Hopkins, blacksmith. Born in 1835 in Buckland Newton, Dorset. Hiram was the son of John and Jemima Hopkins. Recorded at Buckland as a blacksmith in 1851 and 1861. Died at Buckland Nov. 1861..  
HOPKINS Horatio Blacksmith 1828 Horatio Hopkins, blacksmith. Born in 1828 in Buckland Newton, Dorset. John was the son of blacksmith John and Jemima Hopkins and is recorded as a blacksmith at Buckland Newton from 1851 to 1881. He died in Buckland in 1889..

James married Agnes Davis at Piddletrenthide in November 1836 and is recorded as blacksmith 1841 and 1851 at Buckland Newton, Dorset. In 1861he is at Fordington, Dorchester, in 1871 and 1881 at Charminster and is thought to have died at NSW Australia in 1887. Their son Thomas was also a blacksmith..

He married Susan Roper at Bradford Peverell in May 1876, and is recorded as a blacksmith at Fordington, Dorchester in 1861, at Charminster in 1871, 1881 missing, and at Stratton near Dorchester in 1891. He died at Dorchester in Sept. 1897..

WHITTLE John Cady Blacksmith 1841 John Cady Whittle, blacksmith. Born 1841 Portland Dorset. He worked on the railway as a blacksmith in NSW and QLD. He also worked at Redbank Plains, Queensland for Cribbe and Foote, Ipswich as a blacksmith and in about 1876 settled at Gatton Queensland as a blacksmith. He started one of the first businesses in Gatton. The Whittle family have been in business ever since as blacksmiths, saddlers and hardware merchants (Reference: Book -History of Gatton Shire in Lockyer Valley 1979).
