CAY/KAY/KEY Surname information only Blacksmith 1800 Charles Cay/Key/Kay, blacksmith. CAY is a corruption of KEY and KAY. The Kennet and Avon Canal runs through  this small market town which was on the route from Bristol - main port on the west coast to Reading, London and links to the east coast - important cut through rather than sailing round the south coast of England. Historically the route was followed along the rivers many scores of years before the canals joined them. I have this surname in my own tree and links to the famous John KAY, inventor of the Flying Shuttle.  Keys and Kays came from Lancashire, moved through Heritage Valley area of Derbyshire with the Industrial Revolution and mine ended up in Radford, Nottingham. There were Key families working as boatmen on the canals.
