He was 23yrs old making his date of birth 1839 most probably in Monmouthshire. According to the 1871 Census he is described as a Blacksmith and living at Llanfrechva Upper (Panteg). He left his family about 1880 and is reputed to have gone to Italy to work for the King as a locksmith, nothing further was heard from him..
